Sober Living by the Sea

Sober Living by the Sea is a division of CRC Health Group that operates treatment centers for alcoholism, drug addiction, and eating disorders based in Newport Beach, California, USA. Sober Living by the Sea started in 1986 when Carl and Barbara Mosen opened sober living houses in Newport Beach, CA.
Sober Living by the Sea treatment process integrates the 12-Step program of Alcoholics Anonymous into a variety of other therapeutic modalities (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Group Therapy, Psychotherapy, etc.). The program's operations revolve around a central hub of offices (collectively known as "the center") that are located at 2811 Villa Way, Newport Beach. Patients live in residential apartments on the Newport Beach Peninsula and Balboa Peninsula. In the early stages of recovery the patients are closely monitored and there is little freedom for exploring the area in between therapeutic processes. In the later stages the clients will have beach cruiser bicycles and be responsible for transporting themselves to appointments and support group meetings.
Sober Living by the Sea is controversial in the local community for having been involved in a Newport Beach NIMBY issue in which local residents claim that area recovery homes are infringing on their quality of life.〔(L.A. Times Article "it's Surf, Sand, and-- Sobriety?" from January 22nd, 2008 )〕 Sober Living by the Sea reached an agreement with the city of Newport Beach in January 2009 that will allow the facility to continue operating after agreeing to many concessions including a reduction in the number of "beds" the facility will maintain in the neighborhood 〔(Orange County Register Article "Milestone drug rehab deal OK'd in Newport Beach from January 27th, 2009" )〕〔(Daily Pilot Article "Sober Living, City Settle" )〕
Founders Carl and Barbara Mosen have defended their legacy publicly 〔(OCRegister.com Article "Newport Beach Addiction Fighters Defend Their Legacy" from June 24th, 2008" )〕 while the city of Newport Beach has continued to target local rehab home operators with legislative action.〔(Daily Pilot Article "Newport Beach Council Vote Revokes Agreement with Rehab Home Operator from July 27th, 2011" )〕
